First issue out the door

April showers and more snow

Snowdrops spotted off Main St, Tatamagouche. I have lost count as to which “storm” we had this week - it wasn’t Shelia’s Brush, maybe it was the Smelt Storm? If you know, please email me!

Ashton’s Garden Centre - 125 Upper River John Rd, Tatamagouche. Opening May 3rd at 9am for our 5th season! Open Daily 10-4, Saturdays 9-5. Mothers Day Daffodil Walk - Sunday, May 11th. Fairy Walk - May 17th & 18th.

Welcome!

Yesterday afternoon I dropped off 4,200 copies of the first-ever/April 2025 edition of The North Shore Nuggets to the Post Office in Tatamagouche. These will be delivered from Pugwash (well, Port Howe actually) to Wentworth to Earltown, and River John. I have to say, I felt much like many of the performers on stage last night at Finding Nemo Kids, very excited, which is better than mildly terrified … just keep swimming! My apologies to anyone who was missed, this is a work in progress, but I would rather make some mistakes than not get started at all :)

Race to 1000 - don’t forget to share this free email newsletter with friends and family who may be interested. Each time we add 100 subscribers, we will have a draw for a prize from a local business. All subscribers will be entered in the drawn, and if you have referred someone, you will receive a bonus ballot. If we reach 1000 subscribers by midnight on April 30, 2025, we will have a Grand Prize Draw for a $250 gift certificate to a local business of your choice. Visit us at www.thenorthshorenuggets.com to subscribe.

Did you know that 63.2% of Nova Scotians cast a ballot in the 2021 federal election, but only 60% of eligible voters turned out in the Cumberland-Colchester riding? You can find information on where and how to vote at www.elections.ca/.  #ItsOurVote

A Few Nuggets … ICYMI

Last weekend we were fortunate to catch the tail end of a book launch for Beulah Jane Wright’s book “Musings & Memories of River John History” held at St George’s Presbyterian Church Hall.   The first printing of 150 copies of the book were sold out long before we arrived, and a list is being taken for the second printing.  I am looking forward to receiving my copy.  Above is a photo borrowed from IOOF Helping Hand Lodge #34.

  • The Wentworth Learning Centre made an exciting announcement last week - their childcare centre is expanding! They are adding two infant classrooms, each with 10 spaces, and a junior-preschool with 21 spaces - all in an entirely new building located behind the current centre. This expansion will increase the total number of spaces to 111 from its current 70. The new building is expected to open at the end of 2025, with fundraising to begin soon to contribute towards the Learning Centre’s $270k portion of the total $2.7mil project costs. What an amazing resource to have in our area! Congrats to all involved.

  • Lots of passion on display at the sweetest drive-through in Tatamagouche – the 1st Tatamagouche Girl Guides were selling cookies at Tatamagouche Home Hardware on a pretty cold morning. Over 130 boxes were sold in two hours. If you missed out, I am told that there are more to be had – please contact Erin Pope, Holly Cunningham or Brittany Frenette for your fix.

  • 1st Tatamagouche Cubs completed an Introduction to Orienteering in the village. In groups of 3-4, the Cubs used compasses and maps to navigate through the course that had been laid out by the Scouters. What an amazing skill to be developing, well done all!

  • Saturday was also the start of the 2025 season for the Butter Trail parkrun - solo runners, walkers and families gathered for the scenic 5k route. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to participate, just register for a free parkrun ID before you first come along – visit https://www.parkrun.ca/ and select ‘Butter Trail’ as your home run.

  • Grade 12 students and their families have begun fundraising for Prom and Safe Grad activities. In Tatamagouche, this will include a bottle drive in May, or you can drop them off at the depot and mention “Prom”.
